What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is suitable for people of all ages and is used for both the maintenance and optimisation of heath. Naturopathic medicine is a system that focuses on the prevention of illness through the practice of natural therapies. Naturopathic nutrition is based on the principle that given optimal conditions, we can enhance our body’s natural healing power. Health history, age and lifestyle factors are considered before an individualised nutritional protocol is recommended. Supplementation, along with various lifestyle practices, may also be included for additional therapeutic support.

What is the difference between a nutritional therapist & a nutritionist?

There is a lot of confusion about the differing titles that nutritional professionals use. The main difference between a nutritionist and nutritional therapist, is that a practitioner doesn’t require any specific qualifications to call themselves a nutritionist.

A nutritional therapist will have completed at least 3 years of rigorous training in Nutritional Therapy and be registered with a professional body. A ‘registered nutritionist’ indicates that the practitioner has acquired a suitable level of knowledge and is accredited by a professional body.

Many people can and do set themselves up as nutritionists without any formal training or knowledge, so it is always important to undertake a thorough background and accreditation check.

A dietician has completed a degree in dietetics and will normally work within the public sector, such as a NHS dietician. While there are similarities, dieticians and nutritional therapists work under different accrediting bodies and are not the same.
